Living Beautifully ‘The Megan Edit’: PATTERNS
Design wisdom from our founder and CEO, Megan Featherston
Our founder and CEO, Megan Featherston, is constantly asked: "How do I use pattern without it looking chaotic?"
So this edit is dedicated to our favorite design tool, the one that gets the most pushback: PATTERNS.
1.Playing It Safe Is the Real Risk
Here's the truth: neutrals aren't the "smart" choice; they're the forgettable one. The rooms people remember, the ones that make guests stop and look twice, are never the safe ones. They're the rooms with a little courage in them, a bold print, an unexpected mix, a moment that surprises you.
2. Don't Be Afraid of Patterns
.Bold prints bring eye-catching energy to any space, especially a neutral room that needs a moment. A leopard chair, a floral sofa, a graphic pillow: any one of these can take four plain walls from forgettable to unforgettable. Pattern is personality. Own it!
3. Mixing Prints Is an Art, Not an Accident
One of the biggest myths in design is that patterns need to "match." They don't…they need to speak the same language. The secret isn't matching the prints themselves; it's staying within a tonal family. When your colors are in harmony, your patterns are free to do whatever they want.
4.Every Bold Room Needs a Statement Anchor
This is the trick that separates a curated room from a chaotic one. When you're layering prints, always give the eye one place to land, a sculptural vase, a special lumbar pillow, a trinket that stops you in your tracks. That single grounding object is what allows a maximalist room to still feel intentional.
The Bottom Line
Pattern isn't the risky design choice, playing it safe is. If you've been holding back on a bold print because you're worried it'll be "too much," we'd encourage you to reconsider. With the right approach, pattern doesn't overwhelm a room. It gives it a voice.
